Frequently Asked Questions:

What should I send with my child every morning?
  • Backpack, appropriate clothing for the weather, snack, water bottle and any homework that is due.
Can I send in a birthday treat for my child's birthday celebration?
  • We love celebrating birthdays.  If students want to bring in pictures of each year of their life, they can but do not have to.  Birthday treats are okay, but please check before you send in a snack.  We have some food allergies.
My child talks about so-and-so all the time, how can I access their information for a playdate?
  • Make sure to opt in to the Parent Directory so that you can find information for your child's friends as I am not able to coordinate that information between families.  The Parent Directory is voluntary so you may not see the child you are looking for because they've chosen to opt out and not be contacted for playdates/parties.  Please keep up with the directory you are given!  I will not be able to provide copies all year long.
What are they doing all day?
  • The Upper Elementary Montessori classroom is a project-based, hands-on, independent environment that invites your child to explore, learn and grow.  Many of the materials on the shelves are concrete, and as your child moves into more abstract work, you will see more paperwork come home every week.   I present lessons to your child in whole group, smaller group and even 1:1 format.  They have priority works that need to be completed every week.
How does snack work during the morning?
  • Often we will have group snack at the same time.  When the students are busy or engaged in work cycle, snack will be available while they are working.
How many children do we have in our class?
  • We have 28 students in our class!

About Ms. Heather

Picture
I grew up in a small, quaint community in the South.  My father taught law and my mother was a Math and Science teacher and then became a middle school counselor.  I come from a long line of educators!  My father passed in 2003 and my mother now lives with my family.  She often volunteers in the library.  All the children call her Nanna.

I completed my basic studies on a music scholarship before receiving a double Bachelor’s in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from the University of Montevallo.  I returned home where I taught in an Elementary classroom for 12 years.
After marrying Billy, my sweetheart of 5 years, I moved to New Jersey where I taught First grade for 2 years.  In 2009, my husband’s job at AT&T moved us to the Dallas area where I became a Mom and made a commitment to return to graduate school to work on a Masters in Reading and Literacy.

We relocated to Atlanta in 2011 where I finished my Masters and had our second son.  In the Spring of 2016, my husband moved us to Colorado to be closer to his aging parents.  We feel fortunate to be back in my husband’s home state of Colorado.

My love of Montessori began as I have been raising 2 energetic boys that both attend DCS Montessori.  I am truly a life-long learner and wanted to widen my knowledge of Montessori.  My AMS Early Childhood Certification is with Montessori Education Center of the Rockies (MECR), and my Elementary Certification is from North American Montessori Center.  This marks my 20th year of teaching, and my 6th year at DCS Montessori.

When I am not teaching or in school, I am baking, reading, singing, traveling,  and spending time with extended family in beautiful Colorado.

The black and white female is named Tang Yuan which is the name of the black and white "sweet dumplings" typically served during the moon festival in China.

The solid white male is named Kuga which means "cool older brother" in Mandarin.  If you look closely, he has one blue eye and one green eye which often indicates a deaf cat.  He is in fact not deaf, rather a breed from Asia called Khao Manee.
We have 2 fur babies at home.  They were both rescued from the streets of Beijing, China.  They have lived in Beijing, Shanghai, and on the 56th floor of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.  When my brother's job moved him from Dubai to Hong Kong, they required the cats stay in quarantine for 6 months with a 4 month wait list.  Because the US did not have the same requirement, we fostered them until they could travel back to Hong Kong.  That was 6 years ago.  The trip was hard for the then 13 year old cats so they became US "cat"-izens. 😉  They have more stamps in their passports than most humans.  They are truly global kitties!
